Angola and Brazil are two markets that Quatenus works. However, our start was different in each one. We just can talk about similarity when we talk about the operation of fleet tracking that was growing up.
My connect with Angola began in the 1990s. I had projects in different areas, but nothing was connect to tracking. Despite this, I can say that Angola is the biggest “guilty” for Quatenus’ creation. I needed to monitor the trucks that did our services in the country. However, at that time the exist technology for this wasn’t the best one.
I had an idea that become a big opportunity. I decided to develop my own tracking software. It was for internal use, but some companies liked system so much that it emerged Quatenus.
Probably you are asking: And Brazil? When it emerged? Why cross the ocean to invest here? The operation was too similar to Angola that would worth to bet? The risk would be worth it?
“Brazil is a market as promising as it is challenging when we talk about technology”
When we talk about vehicle tracking, we deal with a stronger market here. It is market promising because there are a huge number of people and companies searching for this service. It is challenging because there is a continental dimension. These were the principals advantages that made me came to Brazil. With the market dimension I could sell to more people and consolidate my company. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have the same structure already established in Angola. Thus, the initial investment ended up being bigger.
I accepted the challenge anyway.
The principal difference between Brazil and Angola
The Brazil’s tracking market is very different from I used to work with in other countries. While in Angola the companies used to search for a fleet control and management solution, in Brazil they search for technology security to protect vehicles against robbery and theft. And for sure our technology could help them on that. So much that it was necessary to create a central tracking 24 hours. For now, the central tracking just exist in our operations in Brazil.
Beyond this difference, there was one more unknown challenge: deal with insurers. Every big insurer is linked to a tracking company here. They act in partnership. It wasn’t our reality. We hadn’t this partnership.
I’ll give you an example: when the carrier wants to do a cargo insurance, it can’t be done with the insurer company. So, this insurance needs to be done with a tracking company which is indicated by the insurer. For this reason that tracking companies are 100% focused just in cargo tracking. Because there is a constructed market to them.
The tracking market in our favor
Here we come to our strong point. Technology. Both in Angola and in Brazil the tracking softwares and the applications were deficit. I already had an excellent product, recognized by the market. I just had to do some adaptations and improvements to attend the brazilians’ dimensions. Doing this, I could use my technology and here we are, growing and generating profits above expectations!
And you, had you deal with a challenge to expand your company in other country?
